Weekly Report & Reflection Post #3

Welcome back!

As I said earlier this week, we were introduced to the tool called Feedly. Feedly is a tool different to any I have every used before. It allows you to subscribe to blogs, including educational blogs, social blogs, and newspaper websites. This allows you to keep up to date on your favourite blogs all in one application, rather than visiting each blog separately. It keeps all of these in a Feed Reader, and keeps track of blog posts you have already read to avoid rereading.

The exciting thing about RSS Feed Readers is you can follow blogs on any topic you want, including blogs that inform one about digital literacy, responsibility, and citizenship. There are many blogs that can inform one on how to control their digital footprint, and how to reduce negative impacts and increase positive impacts. Many of these blogs focus on how your digital presence can affect your odds of getting a job. I read an article on my feed reader called The 7 Social Media Mistakes Most Likely to Cost You a Job by Time Money. This was a very interesting article that discussed how
much a social media presence can influence getting employment. It was disheartening to find that most of this consideration turned out to be negative, and a candidate was reconsidered for the position. This article found that not only does inappropriate language and behaviour on social media reflect poorly, but so does spelling and grammar. This will make me be even more critical of things I decide to post online. This is just one example of how Feedly introduced me to read information that I would, in the past, not have read. I have viewed so many different blogs that I was not aware even existed in the past, that I now read on a daily basis.

I will definitely be adding Feedly to my PLE as it is something I will be sure to continue using. I have downloaded the app on to my cell phone and have got into the habit of reading my unread posts on the bus ride to school. I have substituted reading a digital newspaper for Feedly, which I think gives me a wider berth of knowledge.  I have also downloaded the app on to my laptop, which has a similar set up to the website, but I only have to click one button to open the application, which is very convenient. I have learned so much already from doing my daily reading on Feedly, from everything from updated fashion trends, to how statistics can be easily manipulated (which you can read about in my last blog post My Experience with RSS Feeds). My favourite thing about Feedly is how versatile it is. Therefore, when I put it on my PLE it will be under social, educational or learning, and career.

Until next week,

Emma
